What are shipping containers?
Shipping containers are the huge steel boxes that sit on the back of trucks on many of our roads. They are used for importing and exporting goods across seas on the decks of Ships. They are exceptionally designed and so well built that they last for several decades when given adequate care. They are very secure and as a result have found an alternative use for short-term and long-term storage. They can also be converted into all manner of things including offices, site accommodation, toilets and shower rooms, farm houses, sports changing rooms, family homes, workshops, etc. They are also widely used for storage purposes. They are also referred to as ISO (International Standards Organisation) containers because they are required to meet a specific design and build standard.

What are shipping containers made of?
Shipping containers are almost entirely made of corrugated weathering steel (hi-quality Corten steel) with a plywood floor. Aluminium ones are also available, but are not very common.

How heavy are shipping containers?
The weights of shipping containers are usually quoted in two ways; the Tare weight and Gross weight. The Tare weight is the weight of a container without cargo or contents whereas the Gross weight is the weight of the container including its maximum weight of cargo or content. Therefore the Gross weight = Tare weight + weight of content.

The Payload (or Net Weight) is the weight of the cargo or contents that a container can hold.

Are shipping containers weather tight?
Shipping containers are designed for the transportation of goods across the seas, usually on decks of ships. They have heavy duty rubber door seals which keep out the elements.

Do shipping containers require maintenance?
Shipping containers are so well built that they require very little maintenance. They are manufactured to a full marine specification and designed to endure harsh conditions at sea. When used in a domestic environment they provide years of maintenance free life. To ensure the doors are kept in good working order they should be placed on level ground, and we recommend that you grease the door hinges and locking rods at regular intervals.

What is the best surface on which to position a shipping container?
The ideal surface to site a container are such as concrete, Tarmac or paving. It follows that a damp, soft and uneven surface is the worst type of surface. However, shipping containers are very versatile and are of very strong construction and will sit satisfactorily even on non-ideal surfaces such as grass for many years. An ideal surface would also be level and dry. If the surface is uneven, the doors may prove difficult to open. Spacers such as paving stones and timber can be placed under the corners, where the strength of the container is, to level the container even on very uneven ground.
