Reefer containers or refrigerated containers are used to transport goods requiring temperature-controlled conditions in transit, such as vegetables, fruits, dairy products and meat. While a reefer will have an integral refrigeration unit, they rely on external power, from electrical power points. When being used to transports goods across seas, they are connected to the carrying ship's electrical power supply. When being transported over the road on a trailer or over rail wagon, they can be powered from generator sets which attach to the container. Reefer containers are capable of controlling temperature ranging from -30C, -40C, -65C up to 30C, 40C, and are capable of regulating temperature within +or – 0.25C.

From food retailers to festival organisers, the need for cold storage is attracting many people to consider refrigerated containers. Not only do refrigerated containers have an advantage of being completely portable, and transportable via road, rail, and sea, but they also provide an exceptional level of security. They are preferred over conventional cold rooms because of their mobility.
